ADVISOR COMMENTS:

· No advisor present

VP UPDATE:

· Go to lectures that are being offered. There was a Low Impact Development lecture offered on Saturday through AHBL here in Spokane.

PRESIDENT UPDATE:

· We have 30 “active” members; this is more than half the registered program

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

· Jeremy is trying to get access to the GIS lab for us. There is a color inkjet printer in this lab that we would like access to. He is also working on upgrading the computers and servers in the Studio.

· Will raised the concern that the computers are often on in the mornings when he gets to the Studio. Jeremy said that they are a timer of sorts to shut off at night, but then turn on again in the morning. He has tried getting the password from Muhammad (somehow he has this) to reset the timers, but he has been unwilling to give it to Jeremy.

· Tara (new student) offered to run the Cheney meetings through Skype, but was unable to this Thursday because of previous conflicts.

· Jeremy is also trying to set up VirtualLab and NetStorage tutorials for new students.

SOCIAL EVENTS/FUNDRAISERS:

· Karl has been looking into the pint glass cost. He thinks that is will be between $150-200 for 100 glasses. He needs a graphic designer to step up and help with the design. karl.almgren@gmail.com

· Jeremy spoke with the appropriate departments to determine who takes care of EWU logos. Students Accounts helps with ordering, while Marketing/Communications helps with using the EWU logo. We still haven’t decided if we want to have the EWU logo on the shirts.

· Karl had an idea for a t-shirt – Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs having a pillow fight.

· Karl would like the Chili Cook-Off should be a costume party, as well.

· Another game idea for the cook-off would be to guess the age of the student. Two students we would like to use = Joanne & Jason.

· We would like to do a pumpkin carving activity during the day of the cook-off.

· Rose needs some volunteers for set-up and tear-down for the cook-off. Please contact Rose if you are available to help.

· We would also like to designate a DD for the event – in case people drink too much, we would like a safe ride home for them after the event. If anyone is available, please contact Ali Kara.

· Karl would like to do Operation Dinner Out on November 19^th. Basically, everyone would get together and go out to a local restaurant here in Spokane, just as a fun social event.

· Karl also mentioned an interest in starting an intramural basketball team. Please talk to Karl if you are interested in playing.

CONFERENCES:

· The Cascadia Conference (for WA & OR) is taking place in Portland this year over the Oct 19-21 weekend.

· We decided to hold a conference coordination meeting on Monday Oct. 10^th at 11:45AM in the studio. We will discuss reimbursement for the trip, carpooling groups and rooming situations. If you would like to receive funds from ASP for the trip and want to be involved in this discussion, please attend the meeting on Monday.

BROWN-BAG LUNCH:

· Aline will be giving a lunch time presentation at 11:45 on Thursday the 13^th in room 228 about her recent summer internship in North Dakota. Please bring your own lunch (brown bag) and plan to attend to hear about her summer.

The next scheduled meeting on the 20th is cancelled due to the Cascadia Conference. We will plan to meet on the 27^th, instead, as a make-up meeting and then continue with our same schedule as before (so back-to-back meetings).

Cheney Representative election

In order to achieve improved communications between the graduate and undergraduate programs at the Association of Student Planners, a representative from the Cheney campus is explicitly included on the executive board. The Cheney Representative is elected each fall quarter. A description of the position is included below.

For the sake of expediency, we will accept only self-nominations. The association president will second all authorized names received into nomination. Written or emailed nominations are due by 5 PM Sunday, October 9, 2011. Please include your name as you wish it to appear on the ballot, and your phone number so that the association secretary can verify the nomination. Ballots will be sent on Monday, October 10, 2011. The ballots will be due 11:30 AM Thursday, October 13.

You should be an active member to participate.

Please deliver your self-nomination to ASP Secretary Ali Kara (akara@eagles.ewu.edu) with a courtesy copy to the ASP President (sayrs.brian@eagles.ewu.edu). Thank you for your willingness to contribute to your Association.

4.5 Cheney Representative
4.5.1 The Cheney student representative shall serve as voting member of the Executive Board
4.5.2 Shall disperse information regarding the Association to students via in class presentations at the beginning of each quarter.
4.5.3 Shall perform such other duties as required by these Bylaws or customary to the office.

Study in Canada

There are $10,000 (Fulbright) "Study in Canada" Killam Fellowships (scholarships) available for undergraduates to undertake their study abroad in Canada (if American) or USA (if Canadian). Fulbright has funds to award up to 40 scholarships, but only 16 were awarded in the US this year due to a lack of applicants. Four of those 16 are from Washington and Idaho. Students may study at any university in Canada and in any field of study (same for Canadian students coming to the USA).

Study in Canada Scholarships (2012-13) include:

• $10,000 tuition full year / $5,000 one semester


• $500 health insurance


• $800 in-country travel allowance


• 3 day orientation in Ottawa


• 3 day spring seminar in Washington DC

Students may attend any Canadian university and study in any field. Up to 40 scholarships may be awarded. Application deadline 31 January 2012.

Become an active member!

The Association of Student Planners is designed to facilitate social,
educational, and professional opportunities for students pursuing an
undergraduate major or minor in urban planning, students pursuing a masters
degree in urban planning, and all other students with an interest in
planning.

In order to ensure healthy communications between the ASP and the
students for whom it works, we are asking all members to become
"active members" by supplying your name and email address to the club.
The information you provide will not be provided to any third party

Active members will:

• Receive notification of ASP events,

ADVISOR COMMENTS:

· Dr. Winchell is unavailable to meet in Spokane on Thursdays because he teaches a class in Cheney, so he will not attend meetings during this quarter. However, depending on how early he arrives in Cheney, he might be able to participate in those meetings

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

· The Studio received a new printer for student use.

o Please keep prints to one copy

SOCIAL EVENTS/FUNDRAISERS:

· The Chili Cook-Off will take place the last weekend in October – we need to be thinking about rounding up donations for the silent auction.

· Dr. Winchell would like to do a bike ride/social event out to Fish Lake on Oct. 1^st

· The Spokane River Clean-Up day is also Oct. 1^st:

o Ali is working with the Spokane River Forum and mentioned that they will be stationed at Mirabeau Point in the Valley, but there are multiple points along the river to participate. If you are interested in helping, visit these sites:

· Kate mentioned that the The Land’s Council needs help planting 10,000 trees for Reforest Spokane Day on Oct. 22^nd

· Karl brought up the idea of creating department Pint Glasses to sell at the Chili Cook-Off. He has contacted a screen printer in Seattle that can do the glasses for around $3 a piece.

· He would also like to create some sweatshirts and other URP/MURP paraphernalia to sell to alumni at events.

CONFERENCES:

· The Cascadia Conference (for WA & OR) is taking place in Portland this year over the Oct 19-21 weekend.

· Students can register for a drastically reduced price and ASP has received ASEWU funds to help offset the cost and provide scholarships.

o Brian asked for a committee to help coordinate any department efforts for the conference.

§ Jason & Brian both volunteered.

BYLAWS:

· Brian discussed changing the bylaws phrasing to read that anyone who is a confirmed member of the ASP will be considered a member. This is due to the open-endedness of the current phrasing for voting purposes, etc. We will discuss in more length at a later time.

§ Will Simpson has been asked to spearhead this re-phrasing.

ALL DEPARTMENT NEWS:

· We have an all department meeting on Sept. 22.

o We will attempt to do a data collection at the meeting for all who wish to be confirmed members of the association – name/program/cohort/email/birthdates – for ASP purposes

o We will be asking for a Cheney rep for the board, so we should prepare for an election.

§ Karl raised a motion to hold an election for a Rep 2 weeks from now, it was seconded.

Low Income Housing Intern

The Spokane Low Income Housing Consortium (SLIHC) maintains an electronic inventory of publically-financed affordable housing rental units located within Spokane County. I seek an intern to help SLIHC update the inventory. This will likely take about 15 hours per week during the entire 2011 Fall Quarter. We will be able to offer a $300 to $500 stipend.
