Volunteers Needed at Summer Parkways, July 24

July 24, 2011, North Hill Neighborhood, 10 am – 2 pm

Looking for an opportunity this summer to join your friends and neighbors and enjoy walking, running, cycling, and other forms of active transportation on city streets…all in a car-free environment? Well, you’re in luck, because Summer Parkways is back!

On Sunday, July 24, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 4 miles of roadway will be closed to automobiles and opened up to create a loop for bikes, pedestrians, skaters, and other human-powered forms of transportation. The course will run through the North Hill neighborhood, with fun events along the route.

Physical fitness activities like yoga, dance, exercise classes, bike rodeos, and martial arts will also be offered for free along the route, and there will be live music as well. Folks of all ages and abilities may enter and exit the course at any point and enjoy these activities!

Understanding Our Water Resources

Water is vital to the needs of growing communities and as we learn more about our water supply, the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, we can more successfully plan for this growth. In Spokane County, watershed planning has been underway for years and recently, a model was developed to forecast water demand based upon population, housing units, and employment projections. The model is currently being used to analyze alternative scenarios under consideration in the Urban Growth Area Update for Spokane County and its cities.

Presenting the outcome of this first assessment of land use on water demands will be Rob Lindsay, Spokane County Water Resources Manager, and Mike Hermanson, Spokane County Water Resources Specialist. Steve Davenport, AICP, Spokane County Senior Planner, will describe the integration of the model into the on-going growth management planning. They will also discuss the integration of water supply and land use planning in rural settings.

Join your fellow planners for an eye-opening look at what the future holds for water resources in our region and how we as planners can be on the forefront of ensuring this valuable resource is sustained.

Background
The Spokane International District is in the East Central Neighborhood, and the boundaries are from Helena to Crestline, I-90 to the railroad tracks. We work to implement a comprehensive community development effort to increase the vibrancy of this neighborhood focusing on the neighborhood commercial center and surrounding residential neighborhood. The District efforts are lead by a partnership between ECCO, ESBA, Impact Capital and the City of Spokane.

Description
Under the supervision of the Executive Director of East Central Community Organization (ECCO), ECCO has one opening for an internship in Community Development and Historic Preservation. The intern will assist in the implementation of public outreach activities to engage the general public and key business stakeholders to enhance and improve the work of the Spokane International District. Tasks may include: helping to develop business recruitment materials; historic preservation research and definition; help with social media and webpage content; preparing reports; general researching; and related tasks aimed at ensuring the sustainable development of the Spokane International District. This internship will last for the duration of one quarter roughly 10 weeks for 20 hours a week.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicant must be enrolled in undergraduate degree program or have just completed an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a graduate degree in urban planning, rural planning and development, economic development, public administration or a related field. Ideal candidate should be able to work independently or with minimal supervision. Candidate should be skilled in Microsoft Office and data research plus have excellent writing and oral presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications
Applicants with excellent skills in Sketch up, Adobe Photoshop, or other graphic programs are preferred. Experience or ability in Web design is a plus.

Compensation
$1000.00 per Quarter

Studio Presentation on Bike Facilities

All planning faculty and students are cordially invited to attend Senior Capstone/Studio presentation Tuesday in Rm 117 at 2 PM.

Studio Presentation: Learning from Implementation: Assessing Bike Facilities on 37th

Over the past two years, the City implemented both sharrows (Regal to Perry) and a bike lane (Perry to Grand) along 37th. Having these two distinct bike facility types on the same corridor provides an opportunity to assess differences, if any, in bicyclist and motorist behavior. Local university students have undertaken that assessment.

In 2009 GU engineering seniors, followed by EWU senior planning students in 2010–11, have assessed both sharrow and lane segments. On June 7th, 2PM in Room 117 of Riverpoint Phase I Bldg, the EWU student team will provide a 30-minute presentation on findings, implications, and recommendations. Coffee and lite refreshments will be provided. Hope you can attend.
