Annual planning scholarships available

The Urban and Regional Planning Program awards several scholarships throughout the year. To be qualified for these scholarships, you must be a full-time undergraduate student who has declared the Planning major, or a full-time graduate student who is working towards a Master’s Degree in Urban & Regional Planning.

The scholarships available this fall are:

• King & Jan Cole Scholarship, $1400
• Frank Schadegg Memorial Scholarship, $1000.00
• Len Zickler Scholarship, $1000

There is only one application for all 3 scholarships. The awards will be announced at the 2011 Chili Cook-off on October 28th. The application is to be returned to Rose in the Planning Office at Riverpoint, either electronically or in hard copy form, by 5 pm on October 21st.

These Scholarships will be awarded to the student(s) who demonstrates the most overall:

• Academic excellence
• Commitment to planning
• Potential future effectiveness in the field of planning
• Interest in specific planning issues

Book Awards: $1500 available

The Inland Empire Section of the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association is running an essay contest this week. Four student awards will be presented at the Chili Cook-off on Friday, October 28, 2011. Two graduate students and two undergraduate students will be presented awards. First place for each is $500; second place is $250.

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Urban and Regional Planning program at Eastern Washington University. Work must be that of one individual, and may not have been used for another purpose or published previously.

Topics – Entries can answer one of the following questions:

• Question A: In your opinion, what is the purpose of urban and regional planning?
• Question B: What global changes do you think are most likely to affect the local future and form of US Cities?
• Question C: What is the role of urban and regional planning in the current economic situation?

Length – Simple is best. Be concise and efficient when putting your thoughts down on paper. We suggest your entry be:

• No longer than 1000 words
• Images may be included in body of document
• Text should be in sentences, not just bullet points
• The judges are five Inland Empire Section members

Submitting – Entries must be submitted via email by 5pm on October 21st to Rose at rmorgan@mail.ewu.edu.

• Late entries will not be accepted.
• The winners will be announced at this year’s Chili Cook-Off on Friday October 28th.

• Include your name, grad or undergrad, email and phone.

Portland Conference Sponsorships

The Inland Empire Section of the WA APA would like to reimburse students the registration fee for attending the conference. (Up to 10 students) To be reimbursed the registration fee:

• We ask that you provide a ½ page summary of your favorite, most thought provoking or inspirational session that you attend.
• Please submit proof of registration.

Study in Canada

There are $10,000 (Fulbright) "Study in Canada" Killam Fellowships (scholarships) available for undergraduates to undertake their study abroad in Canada (if American) or USA (if Canadian). Fulbright has funds to award up to 40 scholarships, but only 16 were awarded in the US this year due to a lack of applicants. Four of those 16 are from Washington and Idaho. Students may study at any university in Canada and in any field of study (same for Canadian students coming to the USA).

Study in Canada Scholarships (2012-13) include:

• $10,000 tuition full year / $5,000 one semester


• $500 health insurance


• $800 in-country travel allowance


• 3 day orientation in Ottawa


• 3 day spring seminar in Washington DC

Students may attend any Canadian university and study in any field. Up to 40 scholarships may be awarded. Application deadline 31 January 2012.

Fundraising Committee Formed

Pursuant to §4.1.2 of the Association of Student Planners Bylaws, I have created a new committee for the purpose of coordinating the acquisition of non-ASEWU funds for the operation of the Association. It has been designated the Fundraising Committee and it will be primarily responsible for activities related to the annual Chili Cook-off, and secondarily responsible for merchandise sales, requests for donations, and other activities as directed by the executive board or as it may otherwise undertake in pursuit of its purpose.

The committee shall be responsible for documentation of all requests for funds and providing appropriate recognitions for donors. The committee shall submit a revenue proposal to the ASP Treasurer for preparation of the Association's annual budget pursuant to ASP Bylaws §4.4.1.

Substantive participation in the committee shall be considered a contribution to the club as may be required for receipt of ASP scholarships.

Furthermore, I have appointed Karl Almgren and Ali Kara as co-chairs for the committee and I thank them for their volunteering spirit. If you wish to volunteer, please contact one of them directly.
