Book Awards: $1500 available

The Inland Empire Section of the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association is running an essay contest this week. Four student awards will be presented at the Chili Cook-off on Friday, October 28, 2011. Two graduate students and two undergraduate students will be presented awards. First place for each is $500; second place is $250.

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Urban and Regional Planning program at Eastern Washington University. Work must be that of one individual, and may not have been used for another purpose or published previously.

Topics – Entries can answer one of the following questions:

  • Question A: In your opinion, what is the purpose of urban and regional planning?
  • Question B: What global changes do you think are most likely to affect the local future and form of US Cities?
  • Question C: What is the role of urban and regional planning in the current economic situation?

Length – Simple is best. Be concise and efficient when putting your thoughts down on paper. We suggest your entry be:

  • No longer than 1000 words
  • Images may be included in body of document
  • Text should be in sentences, not just bullet points
  • The judges are five Inland Empire Section members

Submitting – Entries must be submitted via email by 5pm on October 21st to Rose at rmorgan@mail.ewu.edu.

  • Late entries will not be accepted.
  • The winners will be announced at this year’s Chili Cook-Off on Friday October 28th.
  • Questions can be addressed to Rose at (509) 358-2230.
  • Include your name, grad or undergrad, email and phone.

Portland Conference Sponsorships

The Inland Empire Section of the WA APA would like to reimburse students the registration fee for attending the conference. (Up to 10 students) To be reimbursed the registration fee:

  • We ask that you provide a ½ page summary of your favorite, most thought provoking or inspirational session that you attend.
  • Please submit proof of registration.
